Hand Felted Rug from Uzbekistan.
A friend has just returned from 3 weeks 'textile touring' in Uzbekistan and kindly allowed me to photograph her purchases. This rug, one of a pair, was made with 2 layers of hand-made felt with the top layer cut away to reveal the colour of the layer underneath. The pair of this one is made from the cut away layer. Each design is stitched down and couched with 2 hand made cords, one with an 's' twist and one with a 'z' twist. Couched together they look like a chain stitched border. Apparently the cords are made by rubbing the spun yarn against the thigh to make the twists. The whole design is then outlined with hand stitching, backed with another piece of felt and finished with blanket stitching around the edges.
